The FDA Put a Seizure Warning on America's Best-Selling Flea & Tick Chews — Most Dog Owners Still Haven't Heard About It

Bravecto. NexGard. Simparica. The pills millions of dogs swallow every month carry an official FDA alert for muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures — and a growing number of holistic vets are quietly moving their patients off them. Here’s what the label doesn’t spell out.

Monthly chews turned parasite prevention into a subscription — one the FDA has since put a warning on.

If your dog is on a monthly flea and tick chew, there’s a sentence buried in its paperwork you were probably never shown. In 2018, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued an alert covering the entire isoxazoline class of flea and tick products — the family that includes Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica and Credelio.

The reason: reports of neurologic adverse reactions — muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures — in dogs taking them. The FDA required new label warnings across the class, and its own fact sheet, updated as recently as 2023, notes that seizures may occur even in dogs with no prior history.

"Seizures may occur in animals without a prior history." — U.S. FDA fact sheet on isoxazoline flea & tick products

How did this become the default?

Follow the incentives. Flea and tick prevention is a multi-billion-dollar market built on repeat purchases: a chew every month or a refill every quarter, for the life of your dog. And the product doesn’t repel ticks at all — it moves a pesticide into your dog’s bloodstream so the tick dies after it bites. Miss a dose and coverage collapses; keep dosing and your dog carries the chemical for life.

To be fair: the FDA still considers these products safe for most dogs, and many dogs take them without visible issues. But "most dogs" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, says Dr. Nathan Hargrove, DVM, a Georgia-based veterinarian who spent 14 years in conventional practice before switching to integrative medicine. "I prescribed these chews for a decade. Then I started keeping a tally of the tremor and seizure cases walking through my door — and the number stopped making sense."

WHAT THE RECORDS ACTUALLY SHOW

2018
The year the FDA first alerted owners to neurologic reactions in the isoxazoline flea & tick class — with new label warnings required.

Seizures
Reported in dogs on these products "without a prior history," per the FDA’s own fact sheet — alongside muscle tremors and ataxia.

Billions
The size of the flea & tick medication market — built on monthly and quarterly refills for the life of your dog.

After the bite
How chews work: the pesticide sits in your dog’s blood, so ticks are only killed once they’ve already bitten and fed.

The question holistic vets started asking

"If a product carries a seizure warning, needs a dose every month for life, and doesn't stop the bite in the first place — is it really prevention?" Dr. Hargrove asks. That question is pushing a wave of integrative vets back toward the older answer: don't poison the tick after it bites. Repel it before it ever climbs on.

Repel-first isn’t new — it’s just been out-marketed

Aromatic plant oils like cedarwood, citronella and clove have been used against biting insects for centuries, and modern lab studies show them repelling ticks — the CDC even helped develop nootkatone, a compound found in cedarwood, as an insect and tick repellent. "Once I dug into the research on essential-oil repellents, I couldn't believe how much solid data was just sitting there, ignored by the industry," says Dr. Hargrove. "There's no monthly refill to sell — which may explain why you've never seen an ad for it."

Dr. Hargrove now recommends plant-based repellent sprays to every client who walks through his door. "When I found FurSure, I finally had something I could hand a pet parent and say: this works, and it won't hurt your dog."
